Introduction
Julia Hailes is a leading opinion former, consultant and speaker on sustainability issues. She wrote the original Green Consumer Guide in 1988, a book that went on to sell over 1 million copies worldwide. And her ninth book The New Green Consumer Guide has just been published to widespread acclaim. In 1989 Julia was elected to the UN Global 500 Roll of Honour for her ‘outstanding environmental achievements and in 1999 was awarded an MBE on the New Years Honours List.

In 1987, Julia co-founded SustainAbility Ltd, a think tank and consultancy company, but sold her share in 1995. She now works freelance from her home in Somerset, where she lives with her three sons – Connor, Rollo and Monty.
In the past few years she has; been a director of Jupiter Global Green, a green investment trust; on the board of Out of this World, a small chain of ethical supermarkets; been vice-chair of a government advisory committee on eco-labelling; helped set up an African charity supporting sustainable agriculture projects in Kenya; joined the Food Ethics Council; become a board member of the Ecos Trust and advised numerous companies such as Marks & Spencer, Shell, and Unilever on sustainability issues.
